Originally, I wasn’t going to watch this series because the trailer didn’t really grab me. However, I shrugged aside my hesitations and decided to watch it and aren’t I glad I did! On My Block had rolling from the get go, here are my thoughts in more detail:
First of all, I want to that the cast in this series was brilliant! Usually when there’s a large main cast as there is here, there’s a character that you don’t particularly like or one who you feel could have been left out. However, this was not the case here. I truly enjoyed watching the adventures of each of the main cast and I believe that this is thanks to the stellar performances of the main cast. What’s more, I absolutely adored the interaction between the four main cast members (five if you included the actress who played Olivia). It really did feel like a family and this in turn made their bickering and bantering adorable but also relatable in a way.
Furthermore, I liked how the all minority cast wasn’t stereotyped. It would have been quite easy for the show to perpetuate stale stereotypes. However, at no point did it ever feel like that. All the characters felt multi-dimensional and real- even Cesar’s brother!
If there was anything that I didn’t like about the show, I would have to say that it was the ending. I hate when shows end on a cliffhanger without first securing a second season! This means that I’m going to spend months wondering if I’ll ever get to find out what will happen. It’s gonna be agony!
To conclude, On My Block was a hilarious and refreshing show that dealt with so many topics without becoming cliched. Netflix is definitely leading the way in terms of diversity by making shows like this. However, I’m hoping they don’t cancel it like they have so many other groundbreaking series.
